A 17-year-old exchange student was killed after she was hit by a driver who ran a red traffic light while she was walking in a crosswalk outside a high school in Colorado. While crosswalks may be intended to provide pedestrians with a safe passage at intersections, things might not go as planned if nearby drivers fail to adhere to traffic laws. Car accidents involving such circumstances can have dire ramifications and parents who lose a child in such a way may find the outcome of the situation challenging to accept.

Fatal pedestrian collision

Authorities say that they responded to reports of a pedestrian-related collision on a recent Wednesday morning. They advised that it occurred as a 17-year-old exchange student was walking in a crosswalk near the school. A nearby driver crossed into the intersection and hit her and reports indicate that she was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

An investigation into the incident reportedly revealed that the driver of the vehicle ran through a red traffic light prior to entering the intersection. No further details were provided as to what might have caused the driver to exhibit such negligence. However, authorities have indicated that this person is currently facing charges for careless operation resulting in death.

What next?

Those who suffer the loss of loved ones in car accidents involving such circumstances may wish to seek restitution accordingly, but they might not know where to turn for advice on their options. Following the incident, a person in Colorado could consider retaining the services of an attorney for advice in carefully evaluating their situation. An attorney can provide insight into all a client’s available legal avenues and assist in determining the best course of action to take to pursue the full amount of compensation to which he or she is entitled to receive.
