It’s no secret that Denver, Colorado is one of the most beautiful, unique and fastest-growing cities in the United States. People from all over the country are moving to the Mile High City to take advantage of the plentiful economic opportunities, affordable housing and gorgeous mountain views. Whether you are a first-time visitor or a long-time resident of Denver, you are most likely aware that driving through this city can be nerve-wracking and stressful.

You may be able to traverse these bustling streets with ease or you may white-knuckle it the entire time you’re behind the wheel. Regardless, it’s safe to say that the traffic jams, careless drivers, pedestrians and constant roadside activity can be tough for even the most seasoned drivers to navigate. Understandably, you may feel overwhelmed as you venture out onto urban streets, but driving safely through a large city like Denver is not as complicated as it seems. What follows may help you avoid accidents when driving through cities

Be aware of your surroundings

One of the most important things you should remember, not only when driving through a city but anytime you are behind the wheel, is to be aware of your surroundings at all times. Pay close attention to the other vehicles near you, and be ready to react if another driver makes a sudden or unpredictable move. Also, avoid distractions, and never use your phone when driving. Stay vigilant, and always keep an eye out for potential hazards.

Watch for pedestrians

Pedestrians are literally everywhere in a city. Always be on the lookout for pedestrians whenever you’re driving on city streets, especially in more busy areas. You might yield to crosswalks, but sometimes pedestrians will attempt to cross the street where there are no crosswalks. Remember, pedestrians usually have the right-of-way, so even if they are not using a crosswalk, just stop and let them cross the street. Pedestrians are exposed and vulnerable, so be extra cautious when pedestrians are present.

Check following distance

There is constant activity around city streets, and sometimes traffic will suddenly stop. If you are following another vehicle too closely, you won’t have time to react if the car in front of you has to stop abruptly. This is a main cause of many motor vehicle accidents in cities. Also, if you are driving on wet or icy roads, it will take longer to stop, so increase your following distance even more in these types of conditions.

Reduce speed and drive defensively

Probably the best way to avoid an accident when driving through cities is to slow down and be a defensive driver. City driving can be stressful, but if you practice defensive driving habits, you will be able to anticipate and avoid potential hazards. Unfortunately, motor vehicle accidents can happen no matter how careful you are behind the wheel. Fortunately, there are options available to help you in the event that you are injured in an accident caused by the negligence of another party.
