Can you increase your chances of surviving a car crash?

On Behalf of | Aug 6, 2021 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

For most people, when they think about possibly being involved in a car accident, their main goal is to simply avoid an accident at all costs. While this is certainly a best-case scenario, there are times when an accident is unavoidable because of the negligent or reckless actions of another driver. Because such an incident could affect you and any other Colorado traveler on the road, you would be wise to consider ways to increase your chances of survival.

Certainly, being a safe and conscientious driver is a great way to increase your chances of surviving a crash. After all, paying attention, avoiding distractions, following the speed limit and other traffic laws, and generally not becoming complacent as a driver are all important. However, you may need to keep some other important details in mind.

How can you protect yourself on the road?

Fortunately, several ways of protecting yourself on the roadways exist. Some tips you may want to keep in mind include the following:

  • Always wearing your seatbelt
  • Securing any loose items in your vehicle so that they do not become projectiles in the event of an accident
  • Performing routine maintenance on your vehicle to ensure that all safety features are in proper working order
  • Considering buying the safest car within your price range
  • Avoiding overcorrecting or slamming on the brakes if you believe an accident is imminent
  • Steering toward an object that may cause the least amount of damage, such as driving into a ditch if a wrong-way vehicle is heading toward you
  • Trying to remain upright and in a typically driving position during a crash so that airbags and other safety features have a better chance of working properly
  • Determining whether slowing down or speeding up could help you avoid a crash

Of course, in the midst of a collision, you may not have time to think about all of these tips or to even fully understand what is happening. Hopefully, your precautions before an accident will increase your chances of survival and minimize any injures you could suffer. If you do find yourself involved in a serious accident caused by another driver, you may want to consider steps to take after a collision, which could include seeking medical attention and considering your legal options for pursuing compensation for resulting damages.
